“Living here is a pleasure… I am always busy doing some kind of activitythe best part is I never ever have to cook again!”—Vallie Roark

Vallie’s Story

My name is Vallie Roark and I have been living at Greenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for about 2 years now. Prior to living here I lived at home by myself for a year after my husband had passed away. Those days were the loneliest days I have ever experienced in my life. I mostly kept house and occasionally would sit outside, as my husband and I had done in the past, but I felt like I was smothering. I wasn’t taking care of myself like I should have been doing and obtained a really bad kidney infection which landed me in the hospital due to not drinking enough liquids. I spent around a week in the hospital and was transferred to Greenwood because I wasn’t safe to go home at that point. When I arrived I thought I had died and gone to heaven. There were people everywhere, to meet and talk to. That meant the world to me because I love to be with people. I even got a roommate; her name is Peggy and we are like two peas in a pod. I take care of her and she takes care of me. Living here is a pleasure and I have not once thought about returning home. I am always busy doing some kind of activity provided by the center or I keep busy in my room with crocheting or chit-chatting with my neighbors. I never again have to worry about my health and the best part is I never ever have to cook again. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed cooking but cooking for one is no fun. The meals here are great and I have plenty of choices to choose from. Everyone here has been as cordial to me as they could be and I couldn’t ask for anything better, I love my new home and family at Greenwood.”

Jettie’s Story

“I am writing this letter to you today to show my thankfulness to Greenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and why they should receive the Facility of the Year Award. I have been a resident at Greenwood for over 6 years and during that time I have see a lot of changes take place, all for the benefit of the residents, their families and staff. One of the changes I appreciate the most is the dining room program. There are lots of menu items  to choose from at each meal and we can also order from a snack menu that is available 24 hours a day. I never have to worry about eating the same old things over and over again, plus the dietary department encourages us to sample future menu items and voice our opinion, that is a plus to me and my neighbors, having the power of choice! Everything that takes place here is about making choices, we choose what activities we want on the activities calendar, what time we want to get up in the mornings and when we go to bed, when we want our medications, showers and meals.  These are just a few of the many wonderful changes I have had the pleasure of witnessing in my 6 years of living here.

“Everyday is something new and exciting! Being President of Resident Council I work closely with the Activities Department, helping to plan events and fundraisers. We don’t just play bingo everyday; we have fun and exciting things to do, like wine tastings, minute-to-win-it and field trips. We can go shopping at Wal-Mart if we want or if we just want to go and ride around all day Nolly and Amy will find a way to do it. Everyone here from the Administrator, to housekeeping has been such a blessing in my life, making sure myself and my peers receive the highest quality care. I am proud of my home and that is why it should receive the Facility of the Year Award.”
